How to Choose the Right Switchgear
A quick reference guide to selecting the correct circuit breaker, contactor, or protection device for your application
Step 1: MCB vs MCCB vs ACB
Choose based on current rating: MCB for up to 63A (homes, shops, small panels), MCCB for 16A–1600A (industrial feeders, motor circuits, sub-distribution), ACB for 800A–6300A (main incoming, bus couplers). Consider breaking capacity: 10kA for residential, 25kA–50kA for commercial, 50kA–100kA for industrial.
Step 2: Size the Contactor
Select contactor by AC3 rating (motor duty) at 415V. Match to motor Full Load Amps (FLA). For DOL starting: contactor ≥ motor FLA. For Star-Delta: line contactor = FLA, delta contactor = FLA/1.73. Always pair with correctly sized thermal overload relay set to motor FLA.
Step 3: Protection Coordination
Ensure selectivity (discrimination) between upstream and downstream breakers. MCCB upstream should have higher trip setting than MCB downstream. Use manufacturer coordination tables for Type 1 or Type 2 motor starter coordination. Add RCCB for earth leakage protection as mandated by IS 732 & IE rules.

Frequently Asked Questions About Switchgear
Expert answers to common questions about electrical protection devices
What is the difference between MCB, MCCB, and ACB?
MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) is used for low current applications up to 63A — homes, shops, and small commercial panels. Breaking capacity is typically 10–25 kA. MCCB (Moulded Case Circuit Breaker) handles 16A to 1600A with adjustable trip settings — used for industrial feeders, motor circuits, and sub-distribution boards. Breaking capacity up to 100 kA. ACB (Air Circuit Breaker) is designed for 800A to 6300A — used as main incoming breakers in LT panels and substations with electronic trip units (LSI/LSIG). All three are available from Schneider, L&T, Siemens, and ABB at Jay Enterprises.
How to select the right MCB for house wiring?
For house wiring: use C-curve MCB (general purpose). Sizing: 6A MCB for lighting circuits (1.5 sq mm wire), 16A MCB for power socket circuits (2.5 sq mm wire), 20A MCB for AC/geyser circuits (4 sq mm wire), 32A MCB for submain feeders. Always add a DP 30mA RCCB at the main incoming for earth leakage protection (mandatory as per IS 732). Choose MCB breaking capacity of minimum 10kA for residential installations.
What is the difference between B-curve, C-curve, and D-curve MCB?
B-curve MCB trips at 3–5× rated current — used for resistive loads like heaters, lighting. C-curve MCB trips at 5–10× rated current — the most common type for general purpose residential and commercial circuits including motors with low inrush. D-curve MCB trips at 10–20× rated current — used for high inrush loads like motors, transformers, welding machines, and X-ray equipment in industrial applications. Most house wiring uses C-curve MCBs.
Which switchgear brands do you stock at your Aurangabad and Goa stores?
We are authorized stockist for Schneider Electric, L&T, Siemens, ABB, Legrand, and C&S Electric. We keep regular stock of MCBs, MCCBs, RCCBs, contactors, overload relays, starters, changeover switches, and distribution boards from all six brands at our MIDC Waluj warehouse in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Non-standard ratings can be arranged within 2–3 working days.
What is the difference between DOL, Star-Delta, and Soft Starter?
DOL (Direct On-Line) starter connects the motor directly to full voltage — simplest method, used for motors up to ~15 HP. Inrush current is 6–8× FLA. Star-Delta starter starts the motor in star (at 1/3 voltage) then switches to delta — reduces inrush to ~2× FLA, used for 7.5 HP to 100 HP motors. Soft starter uses thyristors to gradually ramp up voltage — smoothest start with programmable ramp time, used for large motors where mechanical stress and voltage dip must be minimized. Available from Schneider, L&T, Siemens, and ABB.
Why is RCCB important and where is it mandatory?
RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) detects earth leakage current as low as 30mA and disconnects the circuit instantly — preventing electric shock and electrocution. It is mandatory as per IS 732 (Indian Electrical Installation Code) and the Indian Electricity Rules for all new residential, commercial, and industrial installations. Use 30mA RCCB for personal protection (sockets, bathrooms) and 100mA or 300mA RCCB for fire protection on outgoing feeders. Available in DP and FP from all major brands.
